In this blog entry, the professional NJ carpet cleaning service team here at Carpetline will detail the important things to know about silk rug cleaning.
Caring For SIlk Rugs
- Foot Traffic – We recommend reducing foot traffic on silk rugs. Make a policy that everyone removes their shoes and wears socks or soft slippers when walking on your silk rug.
- Vacuuming– We recommend gently vacuuming silk rugs every week or two with a proper brush attachment like an upholstery nozzle. Never aggressively rub the brush on the rug, and never use a roller or beater brush on your rug.
- Stain Prevention– Keep liquids like wine or juice or other liquids with saturated colors away from silk rugs. Train pets to not lay on silk rugs, and do not apply enzymatic cleaners on silk rugs or pet urine stain removers as they damage silk.
- Rotating the Rug – Rotate your silk rug every 3 months if it is exposed to sunlight to ensure that all areas of the rug are evenly exposed to light. Use curtains and shades to limit UV ray exposure.
- Avoiding Steam Cleaning– Do not steam clean silk rugs, as temperatures above 80 degrees (steam being 212 degrees!) will definitely damage silk.
- Avoiding Standing Water– If there is a spill, use a clean cloth or towel to soak up as much standing water as possible. Then blot the area with another dry piece of clean fabric or towel without rubbing it. Blot all stains with a clean white towel before contacting our professional silk rug cleaning services.
